Body Trust®
I proudly became a Certified Body Trust Provider in 2018.
Body Trust is an approach to healing body shame and disordered eating based on the clinical work of my mentors and colleagues, Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, founders of The Center For Body Trust.
The foundations of Body Trust are:
Addressing internalized weight stigma
Building resilience
Moving toward liberation from individual, cultural and systemic body oppression
Let me explain further…
What is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. Think elasticity. Think toughness. You can cultivate resilience. I can help you.
Resilience can be expanded beyond being able to recover quickly, and simply be being able to claim moments of recovery whether they take minutes, days, weeks, or years to emerge.
As the social researcher Brené Brown, Ph.D. says, “sometimes we have to do tough things and feel our way through tough situations, and we have to feel tough emotions.”
Together we can build your resiliency. We can practice feeling our way through a culture that is often openly waging war on our bodies. We can practice letting all emotions, even the ones that seem the biggest and the hardest to feel, be felt.
What is liberation?
“The action of setting someone free”
“Freedom from limits on thought or behavior”
“Release”
How can you set yourself free?
You have a right to informed choice, to live in peace and belong in your own body.
The focus of the work is on you
…but the reality is we are both living, breathing people grappling with being surrounded by several multi-billion-dollar industries whose livelihood rests on keeping us at odds with our bodies. At the same time, the systemic ignorance, hatred and fear human-kind continues to face around things like race, gender and class have an effect. I can support you in finding more internal freedom and yet when we acknowledge the bigger systems we are both surrounded by, this quote sums it up well:
“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us walk together…” Lila Watson
